WOOD MAGIC FOREST FAIR

It’s that time of year again! It is time to begin scheduling volunteers for this fall’s Wood Magic Forest Fair (WMFF) events. I hope you will consider volunteering your time to help South Carolina’s students know the importance of forests and the forest industry to their everyday lives. To learn more about WMFF, please visit this link http://www.state.sc.us/forest/18wm.pdf to view last year’s annual report.
Thank you to all the volunteers from last year! 1,969 students and adults learned about sustainable forestry and all the benefits of our forest resources. This took the work of 147 volunteers (many of whom volunteered multiple days) who gave 2,504 hours of combined service. 2018 Wood Magic Forest Fair would not have been a success without your help.
I am happy to announce there will be three events this year:
SC Botanical Garden (Clemson) - Oct 8-11, 2019
Harbison State Forest (Columbia) - Oct 28-Nov 1, 2019
Hobcaw Barony (Georgetown) - Nov 19-22, 2019
To conduct these programs we need approximately 28 volunteers each day to serve as guides, instructors, and helpers. Each volunteer is given a t-shirt, lunch, and the satisfaction that they have helped provide the youth of our state an important pro-forestry experience. As a registered forester, you can also receive up to 2 hours of Category 3 CFE credits.
To sign up, first visit the WMFF volunteer page at http://www.state.sc.us/forest/woodmagic.htm and look under “Work Schedule” to see what days and positions are available (this is updated once weekly). You can also find lesson plans, driving directions, and other information at this site. Then contact me to let me know for which days and positions you would like to volunteer. (Please note the above website is not where you sign up, but where you see what volunteer slots are still needing to be filled.)
***A few updates for the 2019 season***
- During the week of WMFF at SC Botanical Garden, Clemson Forestry Club has generously donated the use of their sawmill, which is a Norwood Lumber Mate LM29. We will still need sawyers to operate it this week, but we will provide a training in advance. As most of you know our current sawmill is on its last leg. In the future, we are looking to replace it with a similar style model.
- We added an additional lesson plan this year, “Equipment and Tree Cookies” which can be found here http://www.state.sc.us/forest/wmplans7.pdf. Last year, we had our guides lead these condensed lessons during the popcorn and lunch breaks. This year we will have 2 designated instructors lead these lessons instead. These lessons have been added to the programs based on the feedback we receive each year from the attending teachers.
We look forward to your support of the Wood Magic Forest Fair program. If you have questions give me a call or send an email.
